A recent survey from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology have found that people are suffering from ‘security fatigue’ with many ignoring constant warnings about their cyber-security. The report suggests that this behaviour is leaving more and more people open to damaging cyber-attacks.
What is security fatigue?
Ever found yourself using the same password over and over again? This is part of security fatigue. It’s not following the recommended steps when it comes to cyber-security. In this day and age, you cannot afford to switch off at any point when it comes to security online. If you’re being lazy with your online security you’re one of the millions suffering from security fatigue. Here are what some people who took part in the study had to say, showing classic signs of security fatigue;
“Security seems to be a bit cumbersome, just something else to have and keep up with.”
“I don’t pay any attention to those things anymore…People get weary from being bombarded by ‘watch out for this or watch out for that.’”
Many questioned why they would ever be hit by a cyber-attack as they don’t work for the government or a finance company. The truth is that every single business, organisation and user have some information that hackers would want to get their hands on. Others questioned the point of being cyber-secure when huge organisations such as TalkTalk are being hit by cyber-attacks. A ruling found that some of these big organisations weren’t even following the most basic cyber-security methods.
The study suggests that online services should look at lightening the load on users when it comes to security creating a more streamlined system.
